Can you believe a story about a hobby that uses scissors can win you money? I came across this contest on a writing platform called Vocal Media. Fiskars is the sponsor and the first place prize is $15,000! In addition, the first place winner gets a Fiskars gift bag valued at $750. Not bad for writing about your hobby right?

Vocal is totally legitimate. You can read a complete guide to publishing stories on Vocal here.
A few things you need to know before entering the writing contest:
1. It’s only open to Vocal+ members meaning you need to pay a monthly subscription fee to Vocal to become a paying member to enter the contest. However, they’re running a promotion right now and it only costs $1 to subscribe for the first month. Remember to cancel your subscription after the first month or else it will auto-renew at $9.99 per month going forward.
2. The story has to be between 600 and 5000 words. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a word count option in the Vocal story editor so you’ll need to find a resource to make sure you’re within the word count range.
3. The story has to involve a hobby that uses scissors. This is bolded in the challenge rules but I saw many stories submissions that don’t meet this criteria.
4. The challenge ends in 7 days on June 11 so you need to write your story in the next week.
5. In order to get paid you need to create a Stripe account ( similar to Paypal ). Stripe is not available in all countries so check before you decide to sign up for Vocal.
If you already have a story or love writing I encourage you to take this part in this challenge. The worst thing that’ll happen is you lose $1 for subscribing to Vocal and some time to write your story.
If you’ve made it to the end of this article I would love it if you read my story submission on how I got started sewing and share with others on social media. Tips on Vocal will be much appreciated but totally not necessary.
Thanks for reading and happy “mad” writing!
