I saw this adorable Pixie Noel line by Tasha Noel a while back knew it would be the perfect fabric for my fussy cut heart mug rug pattern. I love how this turned out! You can see the other mug rugs I made using this pattern here, here, and here.
The fussy cut square was too small for the pattern so I added borders around the side to make it the required size. I think it makes a nice addition don’t you think? I suggest using strips wider than what you need so you can trim it afterwards to the required size needed.
I have a layer cake so I didn’t have enough coordinate fabric for a separate binding but it was the perfect size for self backing the mug rug. I quilted the top and bottom pieces together with my batting and left about 1″ border around all sides. Then I used this tutorial to bind the mug rug. This is a good way to create a binding if you don’t have enough fabric. I folded the fabric in half so my binding ended up being about 1/2″ wide. If you would like a narrower binding reduce the size of your border fabric so for a 3/8″ wide binding trim your border to 3/4″ instead of 1″ on all sides.
I hope you enjoyed this variation of my mug rug and got some ideas on making some of your own. Thanks for stopping by today and happy holiday mug rug making!
